This Isn't Leadership. It’s Burnout in Disguise.
The spectators at a marathon only shout a few words: "Keep going!"
It sounds simple when you’re standing on the sideline. But when I was in the thick of the operational race—managing high-friction teams, navigating technical complexity, and putting out daily fires—those words just felt exhausting.
For a long time, I thought the hardest part of leadership was strategy. I was wrong. The hardest part was the quiet, cumulative fatigue that came from striving entirely in my own effort.
When the pressure mounted, I did what most high-performers do: I doubled down on self-reliance. I tried to power through on sheer willpower, over-analyzing every variable and taking it upon myself to fix every problem.
Looking back, I realize that wasn't leadership. It was a fast track to burnout.
I had to learn the hard way that true resilience doesn't come from pushing harder in your strength. It comes from anchoring your endurance in a higher purpose and leaning on a power greater than my own. As Paul noted in 2 Corinthians: "We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going."
If you are currently trapped in that same cycle of daily grind and exhaustion, here is how you can begin navigating toward something better:
Stop executing through sheer willpower. Acknowledge where self-reliance has turned into carrying an unsustainable load.
Shift from control to connection. Re-center through prayer, gain fresh perspective, and reconnect with your core purpose rather than trying to manage every outcome.
Establish firm boundaries. Focus on taking just the single next faithful micro-action rather than solving the entire roadmap at once.
Action cures fear, but purpose is what sustains the action over the long haul.
Looking back at my own journey made me rethink how I approach leadership today.
So, where in your schedule or team goals are you currently trying to strive in your own effort rather than leading from a place of anchored strength?
