A lot of people in tech and corporate operations believe leadership is purely about mastering systems, managing tasks, and optimizing spreadsheets.
I disagree. I have discovered that I cannot mathematically calculate or spreadsheet my way through human friction.
Systems Only Reflect the Character of the Leader
When operational systems feel chaotic, our instinct in IT operations is to audit the data, build another dashboard, or add another layer of process.
But systems will only ever be as stable and effective as the leaders running them.
When we rely strictly on logic and metrics, we won't build operational stability—we build analysis paralysis and emotional disconnect.
The Shift to Identity-Based Leadership
True leadership isn't a top-down operational strategy; it's an inside-out transformation. The difference comes down to three fundamental shifts:
1. Positional Authority vs. Identity-Based Leadership
Positional authority forces compliance, but identity-based leadership inspires deep commitment. When your team trusts who you are as a leader, they stop merely checking off tasks and start taking ownership of outcomes.
2. Logic vs. Purpose
Logic alone freezes technical teams in over-analysis. Clear, purpose-driven leadership gives your people the confidence to cut through noise and take decisive action in high-stakes moments.
3. Metrics vs. High-Road Service
Hiding behind dashboards might shield you from short-term failure, but it destroys psychological safety. Investing in your people through high-road service builds an environment of unstoppable trust.
The Operational Breakdown: Friction vs. Alignment
Positional / Metric-Driven - At the core is: control, auditing, task allocation. The team’s response is: defensive compliance, silence. The long term result: Stagnation, discord.
Identity / Purpose-Driven - At the core is: Coaching, Empowerment, Trust. The team's response is: Autonomy, resilience, initiative. The long term result: Sustained Alignment & Legacy.
If operational systems feel chaotic right now, take a step back from the spreadsheets. This isn’t a system problem—it’s an alignment opportunity.
Where are you focusing your leadership energy today?
In what area of your IT operations are you relying on spreadsheets when you actually need to have an authentic conversation?
How do you balance the demand for hard metrics with the need to build psychological safety in high-stress teams?
What is one shift you’ve made from positional authority to identity-based leadership that transformed your team's commitment?
