The Hidden Path Through IT Leadership Valleys

Most IT leaders believe project bottlenecks and system outages are technical problems.

They aren't. They are identity tests.

Early in my career, I evaluated my success by system uptime, closed tickets, and project delivery deadlines. Managing tasks felt like progress.

Then the unavoidable friction hit:

  • Stagnation: Teams settling for "good enough" execution.

  • Discord: High-performing technical minds clashing over execution paths.

  • Dissonance: Feeling deeply disconnected from the daily grind of fire-fighting.

I was trying to solve relational and leadership issues with engineering logic. I was managing systems instead of coaching people.

When high-stakes disruptions hit—an impassable sea of technical or organizational chaos—positional authority crumbles. If your leadership identity is tied solely to output, every unexpected valley feels like failure.

Everything transformed when I stopped managing tasks and started investing in people.

True alignment happens when you shift from a project manager to a leadership mentor:

  1. Valleys are predictable features of the terrain, not systemic failures. High-pressure seasons are intentional transit points. They exist to build character, endurance, and trust across your team.

  2. People over processes. Systems deliver output; empowered human beings create lasting legacy and genuine impact.

  3. Leading through the unknown. When there seems to be no visible path forward through a crisis, an aligned leader doesn't panic. They provide a calm, grounded presence that enables others to step into their fullest potential.

When you invest in developing others, fostering deep trust, and creating intentional space for growth, your daily stress decreases and your actual impact multiplies.

Leadership isn't about being the smartest technical expert in the room. It’s about building the people who will light the way through the next dark valley.

Which friction point—Stagnation, Discord, or Dissonance—is currently taking up most of your mental bandwidth?

How do you actively maintain a coaching mindset when unexpected critical incidents disrupt your daily schedule?

If you've made the shift from managing tasks to empowering people, what was the single biggest catalyst for that change?
