The louder you yell in IT operations, the less people actually hear you.
We are taught that leadership is about control, uptime, and absolute authority.
But the friction we feel every day—the stagnation in our teams, the discord in code reviews, the dissonance between leadership and engineering—doesn't yield to force. What I have discovered is that it yields to gentleness.
For a long time, I thought being a leader meant carrying the entire burden of the system on my shoulders. It was exhausting. I was trading my peace for positional authority, trying to force alignment through sheer willpower.
Then I realized true leadership isn't an act of control. It’s an inside job.
When we shift our identity from a "positional ruler" to an "aligned leader," our default response changes. We stop trying to fix the external friction and start addressing the internal alignment.
Here are 6 ways to replace operational friction with quiet authority:
When someone serves you, be understanding, not demanding.
Next time a deployment slows down or an outage happens, pause. Be considerate of the human on the other side of the screen.
When someone disagrees with you, be tender without surrender.
You don’t have to back down from standard operating procedures or technical truths to treat people with respect. You will never get your point across by being cross.
When someone disappoints you, be gentle, not judgmental.
True authority offers grace instead of judgment. It defuses the conflict before it corrupts the team's culture.
The next time you face a high-pressure incident or a frustrating interaction today, take a "micro-pause." Shifting your response from self-protection to intentional gentleness doesn't make you weak.
It makes you unshakeable.
How do you maintain a calm presence when an operational crisis hits?
What is one area where a "micro-pause" could save your team from unnecessary friction today?
