Capability or Capacity Impact

Drowning in activity, but starving for impact.

Most people don’t have a capability problem—they have a capacity problem.

We tend to wear a triple-booked, chaotic calendar like a badge of honor. We confuse a frantic pace with true effectiveness.

But when you operate at 110% capacity, you have zero room to think strategically, zero room to be creative, and zero room to actually lead.

When your external schedule is completely out of alignment with your internal capacity, it creates a deep, exhausting friction. Every decision feels harder, every day feels more draining, and you waste immense energy just fighting your own calendar.

You aren't leading. You are just managing the chaos.

True leadership requires margin—the intentional white space between your limits and your current commitments.

Peter Drucker nailed it: "There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all."

Shifting from reacting to leading requires three distinct boundaries:

  • Time Margin: Unscheduled buffer time to think, plan, and be proactive.

  • Mental Margin: Restored mental bandwidth to solve complex problems and make wise decisions.

  • Financial Margin: The breathing room that allows for strategic risk-taking and playing the long game.

Margin isn't lazy. It is a strategic necessity.

If you want to step into your fullest potential and eliminate the internal discord, you have to practice margin as a disciplined choice. Say no to the good things so you have the room to say yes to the right things.

Ready to clear the clutter?

Try a quick Calendar Audit this week: Take 30 minutes to look at your current commitments.

Classify them as a Plant (keep and nurture), a Weed (remove immediately), or a Harvest (completed; time to move on).

Then, ruthlessly protect your white space.

How are you intentionally protecting your thinking time during a frantic week?

What is one recurring meeting you can cancel today without rescheduling?
